doubt he knows its meaning. I vow he will not come to
Couredh's throne through wedding me
! Errant fawner!"
"Perhaps I am too bold, but& why allow him to marry Ilissa?" Tyrus wondered.
"He is not worthy."
"No, he is not, not if he were twice the man." Jathelle sighed. "But she loves
him, and she will have him, no matter how often I tried to suggest how shallow
he is. He has done it without deeds, merely glib tongue and pretty manners. He
won her heart when he came to court this winter. In truth, I believe his
kin-brothers sent him to the city to keep him from meddling in their affairs!
Well, Ilissa loves him. And so he shall be her devoted consort or will rue the
day he came to Cou-redh! I swear! I& I
cannot deny Ilissa anything, even to spare her from a fop like that."
Dim, wavering light sifted up through the rocks, showing Tyrus the young
queen's sad expression. She was gazing into the moonless night to the north.
"We will find her," Tyrus said gently.
Jathelle buried her face in her hands a moment, then lifted her head. "I
have such ugly dreams every night. I see Ilissa, tortured, terrified!
Reaching for me. I can never quite touch her hand. Her tears! They are
daggers, stabbing my brain! It was painful to see her when she was a sickly
child, so sweet in her suffering, so uncomplaining. Every day, every breath,
might have been her last. And when she grew strong and we knew she would live,
it was Hetanya's blessing. I rejoiced and thanked the
Mother of Earth countless times that Ilissa was well and safe. And now& "
Jathelle asked woefully, "Is she alive? Rof doubts that she is. Can you tell
me, Tyrus? Can your sorkra arts tell me?"
He was tempted to lie, but Jathelle deserved an honest answer, and he
suspected she would detect any evasion. "He is a seeker after treasures.
LaSirin is a priceless treasure. I do not think Vraduir will squander such
dearly-bought prizes. It is likely he will hoard them carefully as part of his
great spellcasting."
"All those things he stole the Hetanya crown and the man-fish's silver net and
all
what magic? You said he wanted power," Jathelle whispered.
"Sacrifices!" And she trembled.
"No." Tyrus put his arm about her. Her cloak had slipped off her shoulders and
Jathelle was heedless of the cold. Tyrus replaced the cloak and added part of
his own blanket to shield her from the bitter air. They sat close together,
their body heat chasing away the night's chill. Jathelle pressed his hand in
thanks. Her warmth matched his, even through their gloves.

Slowly Tyrus said, "Power consumes him, a lust for it. But he made a critical
mistake the last time he matched his wizardry with a god. He will be wary,
now. If he stole Ilissa so recently, it means his plan is not complete. That
is in your favor, LaRenya. Search your heart. You said you felt LaSirin's
presence there, that your lives were one. Is it still so?"
A ghost of a smile curved Jathelle's mouth. "It is so. You give me courage to
go on. If I should doubt again, I beg you heal me with the same magic."
"No magic, LaRenya, save the magic of sisterly love."
She continued to hold Tyrus' hand, looking intently at him in the firelight
from below. "I must tell you something. When you arrived at
Drita Meadows so suddenly, I& I almost believed Aubage's accusations. I
was suspicious of you for a pace, thinking you might have taken Ilissa
with magic."
"I would never do that." Tyrus reveled in this closeness far more than he
would have enjoyed the best spot by the campfire.
"I know that now. The skeleton warrior would have killed me, if not for your
sorcery. Does& does this Vraduir hate me so much as that?"
Tyrus recalled when he and Erejzan had spied, watching Vraduir invade the
palace bedrooms, sensing Vraduir's murderous hate. Pained, he nodded. "You
stood in his way."
"And he kills those who get in his way," Jathelle guessed, once more exploring
Tyrus' soul. "What is he like? I hate Vraduir, yet I do not even know him. Yet
he seems to know me, and he sent his warriors to capture
Ilissa."
It seemed fitting to Tyrus that Jathelle should be repaid for Vraduir's evil [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
